Farewell, Brian. You'll be missed.

We lost Brian yesterday.

Although he'd only been around for less than 6 months, he was as brave a soul as you could meet, always running in to protect those weaker than himself. He was a quiet fellow, only commenting when he found something of particular interest, or was bored of hanging around in one place for too long. He could carry more than a fully ladened mule, and his only complaint was when asked to carry more than he could handle. We lost him in a tragic, avoidable accident - one minute he was there, the next he was gone, never to return to us. I have been particularly frustrated by his loss - it was after all, my fault. We'll miss his strong sense of purpose and his dedication to the cause. Not to mention his kick-ass sword and bow.

God bless, Brian. May you find peace in the ether beyond our reach. Tarquin and Martina will do their best to go on in your name, fighting the good fight.

I should point out, for those that haven't realised, Brian wasn't a real person.

He was a character of mine in Champions: Return to Arms. I'm a bit annoyed at losing him - he was accidentally overwritten with another game. Level 80. My best character. Bugger. Tarquin is an old character I'm now trying to build up. Martina is my girlfriend's character.

It's funny how people can imbue such fictional characters with life, and mourn their loss as you might mourn a friend. While visiting friends, I would listen to conversations they were having about a group of people, some of whom had new jobs or were moving house. I assumed at first that they were friends I didn't know - not an unreasonable conclusion I thought - only to find out that my friends were deep into a game of Sim-City...

I'm guilty of it myself of course - characters in my favourite TV shows can illicit the same feelings that real people can. As a child with few friends, these characters would show me how to live life - treat people well, give people the benefit of the doubt, learn from your mistakes - all lessons I learned from the TV. But I try not to put more effort into fictional people than real ones, even though I may not always be successful. I do value my real friendships, but not to the point where I need to be in constant contact with them. To me friendship should not be an obligation. I hope my close friends know that if they need me, I'll be there. If I got a call from my friends in Vancouver saying they needed me, I'd be on the next plane I could get. But I don't feel the need to email them every week and let them know in the minutest detail what has happened to me in the last seven days. With friends in the UK, I don't feel like I should have a regular day when I see them, at set intervals. If I get a call from them, or they get a call from me, we might get together and do something. If not, I don't take offence, and neither should they.

To me the best friendships are the ones where you may not talk to each other for weeks or months, but as soon as you get together it's like you've never been apart. The phrase 'Gordon's alive' or 'There is no sanctuary' have a very prominent place in my life, and I'll never fail to smile whenever I hear either of them (or many more - 'He tasks me....he tasks me and I shall have him...', 'Welcome to fan-tosy island...' or 'Bring me the boar worms...' to name a few more). Anyone who can name the films or TV shows gets...well nothing really.

Anyway, I just wanted to do something a bit more light-hearted to get away from the rants (although don't you believe for a second there aren't more on the way). So here, in no particular order, are my top 5 little gems from the screen which light up my life (and that I can think of right now) which unless you know where they come from, will probably mean very little to you:

'Get outta my house....Exodus'
'Listen carefully Marge...it's the thing...next to the other thing...'
'Cross; noun; thing they nail people to'
'The bitch hit me with a toaster'
'Full power now'

Until next time...where I expect normal service may be resumed...!
